When a domain expires it does not simply enter the market directly from the previous owner’s registrar account. It is actually a longer process involving different steps from active to available status. Thousands of domains expire every day and I bet that not all of them were meant to. A registrant has to renew his/her domain once a year in order to keep it otherwise the expiration process will begin. If you own a domain that you intent to keep you should definitely activate the automatic renewal in your registrar account, that way you will avoid loosing your domain. Always make sure to keep your contact information up to date. Your registrar will send you notifications by email when your domain is due to expire, so you are the only one to blame if you lose the domain without knowing it.
1. Active status - This is when you own the domain and should take notice of expiration dates. When the expiration date is closing in your registrar will most likely send you an email.
2. On-Hold - If a domain is not renewed the registrar will cease all services attached to that domain like emails, forwarding etc. The domain it self will also cease functioning and you will see a blank site when you type in the address in a browser. At this stage the domain can still be renewed and reactivated by the registrant for standard registration fees.
3. Redemption period - This is a 30 day grace period where a registrant is still able to renew a domain, but now for a much more expensive fee. Normally it will cost the registrant about 100$ depending on the registrar to renew and reactivate the domain when it is in its redemption period.
4. Pending delete - At this stage a domain can no longer be renewed not even for a large fee. The pending delete status is the last step before the domain is released to the public for anyone to register. It takes 5 days and in that time frame the only thing you can do to enhance your chances for re-registering it is to backorder it. By backordering a domain you pay someone to register it as soon as it hits the market (normally about 60$), but no one can guarantee you that they will be successful. You can also try and snatch the domain yourself the day it expires, but if the domain is a good one chances are that someone has backordered it, and those backordering services are almost impossible to beat.
Backordering services include: Snapnames.com, Namejet.com and Pool.com, Godaddy also offers a backordering service which is cheaper (about 20$), but it is a bit slower than the other services.
